In order to change the default media sizes in WordPress, what you do is log in to the backend of your site. When you come down, you can see Settings and Media. Once you get to the Media Settings page, you can see that there are various image sizes you can change. You have a thumbnail size, medium size, and large size. These are the default WordPress sizes.

Based on the theme that you’re using, you may have additional sizes for images. You can also adjust them here. For thumbnail size, you can change the width and the height, same for medium and the large sizes.

Note that when you change these sizes, they only apply to new images that are uploaded to the site. In order to deal with older images that you have uploaded before you made these changes, you’ll need to use some type of a plugin, such as Regenerate Thumbnails or another similar plugin that will allow you to retroactively change the sizes of images you’ve already uploaded.
